Iowa is enacting new radon disclosure requirements on December 23rd of this year to reflect the growing concern among health agencies about the effects of radon. See Iowa Department of Health Radon Program Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that results from the natural decay of uranium and radium in the soil. According to the EPA: "There are no immediate symptoms from exposures to radon. Based on an updated Assessment of Risk for Radon in Homes (see www.epa.gov/radon/risk_assessment.html ), radon in indoor air is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States. Smokers are at higher risk of developing Radon-induced lung cancer. Lung cancer is the only health effect which has been definitively linked with radon exposure. Lung cancer would usually occur years (5-25) after exposure" Iowa is particularly affected due to the presence of glacial soils.Read about radon at the Environmental Protection Agency. See EPA MAP The new law in Iowa Requires the following item be included in all property disclosures on or after December 23rd 2009: Seller acknowledges requirement that Buyer be provided with the "Iowa Radon Home-Buyers and Sellers Fact Sheet" prepared by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
